On the healing effect of Asian martial arts on psychiatrically ill children and adolescents

Abstract

The article presents japanese martial art of budo with it’s relevance for pedagogic and therapeutic work and outlines an example of the application of “Budo Therapy” in the context of clinical child and adolescent psychiatry. A differentiation will be made between budo therapy for expansive disorders on the one hand and internalizing disorders on the other hand.

Jörg-Michael Wolters

PhD, Doctor of Education, KarateDo teacher, head of the professional training for budo pedagogues (Institute for Budo Pedagogy, IfBP Stade), founder of the discipline of budo pedagogy; the origin is mainly based on his pilot study (dissertation), in which he examined and evaluated the successful therapy of violent, delinquent adolescents through training based on budo/martial arts and empirically worked out the social educational significance.
