Cancer patients play improvisational theatre to awaken spirits - use therapeutic effects!

Abstract

By way of introducing the “Tumorists” – the first impro and playback theatre group for cancer sufferers – this article offers some background information on cancer, and on the use of creative methods in providing psycho-oncological support. Scenic improvisation draws on a central human resource: free play during childhood. After discussing the three types of improvised stage theatre known in Germany, the article offers a detailed description of ten therapeutic effects attainable through improvisation with cancer sufferers. It shows how to improve group members’ quality of life and enhance their regenerative potential. Impro theatre therefore holds great promise and utility within the realm of psycho-oncological interventions – a fact that should be acknowledged in the scientific literature and debate about the development of effective therapeutic approaches for cancer sufferers. The article concludes by encouraging a proactive exchange between cancer sufferers, health professionals, and theatre groups.
