Does the experience of meaning change after a near-death experience? Qualitative
Qualitative research from the perspective of persons affected
Abstract
In recent decades, international research, especially quantitative research, has focused on the effects of near-death experiences (NDEs) on the subsequent lives of those affected and their personal and professional values. However, there are neither German nor international studies that focus on whether and how exactly the experience of meaning changes after an NDE. Therefore, the aim of this study was to survey near-death survivors using qualitative interviews in order to gain a deeper understanding of this complex topic. The data from N=8 participants were evaluated deductively using qualitative content analysis. The results show that NDEs sometimes triggered a search for meaning for the first time, which led to a decrease in material values and an increase in non-material values. The latter influenced almost all other areas of meaning and life of the participants, such as their sources of meaning in everyday life, life purpose/life destiny, self-care, social contacts and the meaning of life. The participants also gave recommendations for people with questions of meaning. The results section also includes an introspective reflection by the interviewer on the impact of the study on her personal life. Despite its limitations, this qualitative study provides a profound insight into the changes in the experience of meaning after NDEs, thus offering a sound basis for future research. Psychotherapists, patients and those interested in meaning can also find valuable suggestions and support.
