Shamanic Playback Theatre

Abstract

Shaman like Playback Theatre refers to traditional concepts of story telling in pre-industrial societies with their focus on great tales. Traditional pre-literary shamans did not live in an environment coined by the ego- consciousness of modern men. Enacting stories on stage in a non-ego centered way means to transform the essence of the story in a vertical dimension. Playback Theatre can be understood as reinvention of a creative culture of gift opposite to the modern market of commercial merchandise. Consequences for the professional training of Playback practitioners are discussed.

Prof. Dr. phil, *1944, Professor of Educational Science, University of Kassel; 2000-2005 Chairman of the Centre for Teacher Training, University of Kassel; since 1996, together with Charlette Auque-Dauber, head of the group 'Resonance - Playback Theatre Kassel'. Further training in Gestalt therapy/ integrative body and movement therapy (grad. Düsseldorf, FPI, 1990; DGIB, DGIK, DGGK). Further training in playback theatre (member IPTN, practitioner, grad., New York 2001). Founding member and until 2007 spokesperson of the commission 'Pedagogy and Humanistic Psychology' in the German Society for Educational Science; co-editor of the series of publications on Humanistic Pedagogy and Psychology, Klinkhard, Bad Heilbrunn.
